8

Let’s talk about 8.

What is 8?

8 is a new album concept that I came up with, and that I’m working on right now.

8 will have 8 songs, with each song having a maximum of 8 tracks. Every track will have a maximum of 8 plugins.

In 8, all the songs will have unique time signatures, from 1/4 to 8/4. The 1st song will have a time signature of 1/4, the 2nd song 2/4, the 3rd 3/4, and so on.

Why 8?

The reason I started working on 8 is because I can use my experience in Tabla in my music production.

Because I have experience in a rhythm instrument (I’ve been learning Tabla for 9 years now), I have enough knowledge (I hope!) to make stuff that is interesting rhythmically.

8 will also have songs that are more simple (relatively), so I’ll ideally not overthink things too much (which is something I tend to do a lot while producing music). The music will be a bit more lo-fi and chill, which allows the interesting rhythm and beats to shine.

Also, 8 makes me work within restrictions, and everyone knows that working within restrictions is what creates the greatest ideas.

How long will 8 take?

A while, honestly. Even though the songs are simple, I really don’t have much time to produce stuff. It will take at least a month or two from now to reach release. I still have to balance schoolwork with 8 and all my other projects.

What’s going on right now?

Right now, I’m working on Track 7. It’ll be a lo-fi track, in 7/8, inspired by the Moonglow Bay soundtrack.

I’ve gotten the structure pretty much down and I only have a few instruments to record before I can move into converting the loop into a song.

It should be ready in a couple of weeks!

How do I keep track?

Make sure to subscribe here! Updates to 8 will be out on the blog, and on the YouTube channel!

I might also start livestreaming my production work, hitting 2 birds with one stone. But that’s not final!

This Week’s Updates

Reducing procrastination using systems

An interesting thing I learnt this week was how to reduce procrastination using systems.

People are more likely to procrastinate if there is more friction to do the things you want to do.

Therefore, the way to beat procrastination is to minimize systems.

Now, to minimize friction, we can create systems that make doing the thing you want to do more fun; and also make it easier to get started with the things you want to do. For example, keeping your mic always set up, so that it’s easier to record your podcasts.

Therefore, optimizing for lower friction is the way to beat procrastination.

Procrastination and time

This is an eye opener: it is not possible to procrastinate if you literally don’t have the time to do the thing.

If you have to do something, and you literally have no time left in your day, it’s not procrastinating.

It is only procrastinating when you do something that is of lower priority (to you) instead of doing the thing you want to (or are supposed to) do.

YouTube

The YouTube channel comes back to life tomorrow! Keep your eyes out for videos, daily!

Don’t expect much, though. They’re just going to be shorts for tiny bites of information.

Anyway, that’s all for this week! A shorter post, mainly because I didn’t get enough time to write more, but its alright! Next week will have a longer post (probably)!

Thanks for reading!
