Should I Diversify?

If you’ve read the last two blog posts (and I highly recommend that you do, they investigate the world of online media and how important YouTube is in it), then you would have realized how much I like the product YouTube has created.
A question that has been running through my mind, though, is whether I should make different kinds of stuff and put it on YouTube, or whether I should diversify and put different types of content on different platforms.
Arguments against diversification
- If I put all my content in one place, it will be easy to reach for the audience.
- My current content strategy is focusing on short-form video for a while, then slowly transitioning towards long-form video. If I keep both forms in one place, it is easier to convert a Shorts viewer into a longform viewer.
- It’s easy to monetize all types of content on YouTube.
Arguments for diversification
- If YouTube dies/makes a stupid policy decision, it will be hard to pivot away from it.
- An ad-pocalypse on a site like YouTube completely cuts off revenue.
- YouTube’s products aren’t perfect; other platforms have better specific features (eg. TikTok discovery is better than Shorts’).
The Decision
Because, at the moment, monetization isn’t a big deal for me, I think sticking with YouTube for most of my content makes sense. Keeping everything in the same place just seems easier to deal with (for now).
Doesn’t mean it can’t change though!
This Week’s Updates
Using Friction
Friction is a powerful tool when it comes to productivity.
The easier you make it to do something, the more you’ll tend to do it. In the same way, the harder you make it to do something, the less likely it is that you’ll do it.
Adjusting the level of friction to do a task helps maintain good habits, learn new ones, and lose bad habits.
Out of town
I’m out of town at the moment, and I wrote this blog post last week. That’s why this post was a bit short!
